He first went to Ithaca College and then transferred over to Bennington, where he received a BA in math and music. After gaining this experience of life on the road as a musician, he decided to enroll in college. During his travels, David collaborated with bluegrass notables Tony Trischka and Barry Mitterhoff. He would wind up joining a bluegrass band, and after high school, went on the road for a year. David began playing violin at the age of 8 and went on to play other instruments, such as: the oboe, 5 string banjo, guitar, bass, cello and mandolin. Originally from West Orange, New Jersey, David was exposed to music at a young age as his father and grandfather were both musicians. Jaffe is a composer and electronic music pioneer from California.
